New York 28/03/2012 - Gold is viewed by the US public as the “best investment” right now, chosen by 37 percent of respondents to CNBC's All-America Economic Survey released Wednesday.

The yellow-metal easily beat out real estate at 24 percent and stocks at 19 percent, according to 836 Americans polled by the business news outlet.

Gold is often bought by investors as a hedge against fiat currency devaluation, financial and geopolitical risk and future inflation. The survey clearly indicates that a large percentage of the US populace remains quite worried about the economy and believes that higher prices for goods and services are on the horizon.

Among the respondents who said that the economy will get worse over the next year, 50 percent believe that gold is the best investment, compared with 32 percent who expect the economy to stay the same, CNBC said.

Inflation is also viewed as a problem with 82 percent expecting the cost of everyday products to increase over the next 12 months, while a third speculated that gasoline prices will remain elevated for longer than four years, it added.

In terms of political affiliation, 43 percent of both self-identified Republicans and tea-party supporters see gold as the best investment compared to just 32 and 33 percent of Independents and Democrats, respectively. However, all the parties agreed that gold is superior to stocks, bonds, cash and real estate.

There is also little difference between income classes with with 39 percent of those making between $30,000-$50,000 per year voting gold as the best investment, versus 42 percent of those making more than $100,000, the survey reported.
